CPT in plain terms
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is how F-1 students work an internship or co-op while still in school. Your school's DSO authorizes it on your I-20 for a specific employer and dates. Most schools require one full academic year first, though some graduate programs allow it right away. Part-time CPT during the semester is up to 20 hours a week, and full-time CPT is usually during breaks. The employer does not file a visa petition. They typically just need to give you an offer letter with dates, hours and duties for your school's CPT request. One thing to watch: 12 months or more of full-time CPT removes your OPT eligibility at that degree level, and part-time CPT does not count toward that.
