How many applications does it take to get a job on OPT?
Many international students send hundreds of applications and still hear nothing. The number matters less than where they go and what they look like. Here is how to work out a real weekly target from your own numbers.
Short answer: There is no fixed number. It depends on your field, level and how well each application is targeted. What matters for an OPT candidate is a steady weekly volume of tailored applications sent only to employers that actually sponsor H-1B. If fewer than 1 or 2 in every 100 of your applications get a reply, the fix is usually targeting and tailoring, not more volume.
Work it out from your own reply rate
Take your last 100 applications and count the replies that led to a recruiter call or interview. Divide the number of interviews you want by that rate. If 3 in 100 get a call and you want 6 interviews in the next month, you need about 200 targeted applications that month, or around 50 a week. If your rate is close to zero, sending more of the same will not change it.
What we see from candidates who reach out
In a small sample of 13 candidates who answered this question on our free tools in September 2026, 8 had already sent 50 or more applications, and 4 had sent over 200, most without the results they wanted. Small numbers, but the pattern is common: plenty of effort, not enough of it aimed at employers who can hire someone on a visa.
Why volume alone fails on OPT
A large share of openings are at employers that never sponsor, so a big chunk of a high-volume search is wasted from the start. Generic resumes also get filtered out by applicant tracking systems before a person reads them. Filtering to sponsors first and tailoring each resume to the posting usually does more than doubling the count. Check who sponsors your role with the sponsor shortlist, and see not getting interviews on OPT for the common fixes.
Keeping a steady pace while the clock runs
The hard part is not one big push but keeping 30 to 50 good applications a week going for months while you study, work or interview. That is the part we take off your plate. A real person on our team picks roles that match your background and level, tailors your resume to each job description using only your real experience, writes a real cover letter, and submits. Every employer is checked against the DOL filings first, so your applications go to companies that have actually sponsored this kind of role. Nothing is auto-submitted without a person looking at it, and you get a weekly report of everything sent. See how it works.
Applying by field: data science, software engineering, data and business analyst, mechanical engineering, internships on CPT.
What it costs
It starts with a $49 trial of 20 applications so you can see the work before paying more. Most students close to graduation pick the Placement plan: $200 a month with unlimited applications, and a placement fee only once you are hired.
Common questions
How many applications does it take to get a job on OPT?
There is no fixed number. Work it out from your own reply rate: divide the number of interviews you want by the share of applications that get a response. If fewer than 1 or 2 in 100 get a reply, fix targeting and tailoring before adding volume.
How many jobs should I apply to per week on OPT?
Many candidates aim for 30 to 50 tailored applications a week, sent only to employers with a real H-1B sponsorship record. A steady weekly pace matters more than occasional big bursts, because your unemployment days keep counting.
Why am I not getting interviews on OPT?
The most common reasons are applying to employers that never sponsor, using one generic resume for every posting, and targeting roles above your experience level. Filtering to sponsors and tailoring each resume usually helps more than sending more applications.
Can someone apply to jobs for me on OPT?
Yes. FlexApply applies on your behalf to employers with a real H-1B sponsorship record, tailors your real resume to each posting, and sends a weekly report. It starts with a $49 trial; the Placement plan is $200 a month with unlimited applications.
