Jobs That Sponsor OPT: How to Find Employers Who Will Keep You

If you are searching for jobs that sponsor OPT, there is one thing that will save you months of wasted applications. Working on OPT does not need sponsorship at all. What you actually need is an employer who will sponsor your H-1B later, before your clock runs out. Here is how to find those employers, based on official DOL data from July 2025 to June 2026.

First, the thing nobody explains clearly

OPT is your own work permit as an F-1 student. You do not need an employer to sponsor anything for you to work during OPT or the STEM OPT extension. That part is on you, not them.

So why does everyone search for "jobs that sponsor OPT"? Because of what comes next. OPT runs out. Standard OPT gives you 12 months, and STEM fields can add 24 more. To stay in the country and keep working after that, you almost always need the employer to sponsor an H-1B. If they will not, the job is a dead end with a timer on it.

So the real question is not "who sponsors OPT." It is "who will hire me now and sponsor my H-1B before my clock runs out." Get that right and the whole search gets simpler.

Why your clock is the whole game

On OPT you are allowed up to 90 days of unemployment. The STEM extension adds 60 more, for 150 days total. Go over and your status is at risk. That is a hard, fixed deadline, and it is the reason targeting matters so much. Every week spent applying to companies that will never sponsor is a week off a clock you cannot get back.

Knowing who sponsors is step one. Applying to them every week is the work.

We apply for you every week until you land an offer: a person picks roles you fit, tailors your real resume to each one, applies only to employers that have sponsored H-1B, and sends you a weekly report. Placement plan is $200 a month, and the placement fee is charged only once you are hired.

Who actually sponsors, in real numbers

From July 2025 to June 2026, 29,737 U.S. employers filed two or more certified H-1B applications, covering 499,430 filings with a median offered wage around $112,000. Those are the companies worth your applications. Everyone else, however good the job looks, cannot keep you past OPT.

And it is not just the famous names. The biggest filers include IT and consulting firms like Cognizant, Infosys and TCS, alongside Amazon, Microsoft, Apple and Google, plus thousands of banks, hospitals, retailers and mid-size firms. It is not only software roles

Software Engineer is the most-sponsored occupation by far, but sponsorship runs across many fields. Browse the sponsor list by the role you are actually targeting:

How to find OPT-friendly employers

Here is the process that works, in order:

  1. Start from past sponsors, not job boards. A company that filed H-1B before has shown it is willing. Filter that list by your role and location to get a list of employers who both sponsor and hire people like you.
  2. Build a shortlist of 60 to 100. Enough to run a real search without wasting applications. You can build one for free by picking your job title.
  3. Start early, while your clock is full. Sponsorship-friendly roles fill and H-1B cap windows are fixed. The candidates who run out of time usually started late, not lazy. Check your remaining OPT days and work backward.
  4. Tailor each application. The screening software scores your resume against the job description before a human sees it, and international candidates get filtered there the most. Mirror the exact keywords from each posting.
  5. Answer the sponsorship question honestly. Say you will need H-1B sponsorship in the future and let a real sponsor self-select. Hiding it only wastes the runway when it surfaces later.

The mistakes that quietly waste OPT

  • Applying everywhere. Volume without targeting burns your clock on companies that will never sponsor.
  • Chasing only the famous names. Everyone applies to the same twenty. The mid-size sponsors get fewer applicants and better odds.
  • Waiting to start. The best time to target sponsors is the day OPT begins, not when you are down to your last unemployment days.
  • One resume for every role. Generic resumes score low with the screening software and get filtered before a human looks.

Methodology

Sponsorship figures come from the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Foreign Labor Certification (OFLC) LCA disclosure data for decisions from July 2025 to June 2026, counting certified Labor Condition Applications grouped by employer. OPT and STEM OPT rules reflect current USCIS policy: 90 days of allowed unemployment on standard OPT, 150 days total with the STEM extension. Filing an H-1B petition before does not guarantee a current opening or a hire; use it to build a shortlist, then check who is hiring now.
